Mother and baby humpback whales killed in Bequia!

Protest this action to the International Whaling Commission

In a tragic repeat of past slaughters, Bequian whalers once again terrorized and killed a baby humpback in front of its mother. When she came to her baby’s rescue she was harpooned and died a slow, agonizing death. The baby was only 17 feet long, indicating a very young calf.

Ironically, the hunt is left over from when a Yankee whaling station operated there. While the US is now one of the strongest whale protection nations, Bequia continues to kill adult whales by harpooning their babies and then their mothers.

The taking of calves is prohibited by the IWC but this has not stopped Bequia which is the equivalent of a state of St. Vincent, a democratic nation. Bequia has a population of 5,000, a relatively high standard of living and low unemployment. They do not need to kill whales to survive. There is no excuse for this "sport". We propose a tourism boycott of St. Vincent and that pressure be put on the International Whaling Commission and enlightened countries to censure St. Vincent..

Get involved- go to the CRY OUT! Section and protest to IWC Secretary Ray Gambel. The killing of endangered humpback whales and the tragic end to this little calf cannot be allowed to go unprotested!

Kudos to the observers who reported on this terrible event to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society who then spread the word.

SAMPLE LETTER TO St. Vincent

The killing of a mother humback was outrageous. Though your country is beautiful, I will not visit it until you notify me that you have banned the killing of all whales in your country. Please encourage the lucrative trade in whale watching and not the torture of whales

Sincerely,
